Police launch manhunt after 5 remandees escape from Nginyang cells

Police in Nginyang, Tiaty West Sub County have launched a manhunt for five out of eight remandees who escaped from the station cells Tuesday evening.

Speaking to KNA on phone, the area sub county police Commander (SCPC) Tobias Ombima said the 5:30 pm incident occurred, when the prisoners pushed and managed to break the cell door.

Ombima said that the remandees who overpowered officers on duty might have noticed a weakness in the station’s structure before they broke it.

He stated that by the time of the incident, there were 17 detainees in custody, but eight of them ran out of the cells and jumped out of the compound.

“The officers immediately raised an alarm upon the escape which led to re-arrest of three some few kilometres from the station,” he said.

The SCPC said the five who are still at large are Apura Lokilekwang who is charged with the offence of stock theft, Sekra Nameri charged with attempted rape, while Ruto Kases, Lorangi Domokwang and Amanat Makal are all defilement suspects.

Ombima said they mounted a search for the escapees and hope to apprehend them soon since they have sealed all the escape routes, adding that they were in possession of their personal details.

At the same time, he called upon residents of neighbouring towns to forward any crucial information that will lead to the arrest of the five notorious criminals.
