Kenya joins the world in marking World Children’s Day

Kenya has joined the world by marking this year’s World Children’s Day at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), under the theme, equality and inclusion for every child.

President Dr. William Ruto in a speech read on his behalf by the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said his government will safeguard the rights of children through the development of relevant policies, programmes and projects.

Dr. Ruto said that the Government will also continue to disburse the annual Sh400 million Presidential Bursary Fund to ensure the orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) successfully complete their education.

The Government will equally recruit more teachers to close the current teacher shortage gap of 116,000 within two financial years.

Speaking during the event, UNICEF Kenya Deputy Representative Mr. Jean Lokenga applauded the current Government for including children’s issues in its priorities.

“As these pledges are implemented, they will help improve children’s lives and life prospects,” he said.

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary (CS) Florence Bore lauded the Childrens’ Act 2022, which is aligned with the Constitution of Kenya and the emerging children protection issues such as online child protection, education, violence against children among others.

She said this day is a reflection to take stock of the progress made towards the realization of the rights of children, adding that, “It is also a moment to renew our commitment to the children of Kenya.”

United Nations Resident Coordinator Dr. Stephen Jackson in his remarks reaffirmed UN’s commitment to working with the Kenyan Government to ensure that every child in Kenya can joyfully grow and enjoy their full range of rights.

“World Children’s Day is about promoting equality and inclusion for every child regardless of gender, race, religion, or disability. Every child has the right to be included and protected against discrimination,” he said.
