The Judiciary will set up an Environment and Land Court in Laikipia County to determine the numerous and pending land cases in the region, Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Vice Chairperson, Mercy Deche has said.
Speaking on Monday after she led a delegation from JSC in a meeting with area Governor Ndiritu Muriithi in Nanyuki town, Ms. Deche noted that the region had many pending land cases and disputes that required speedy conclusion and that a judge would be posted soon to Nanyuki to hear Land matters
Governor Muriithi said there was need for speedy conclusion of land related cases by the judiciary in the area as they had contributed to some of the disputes witnessed in the region.
The Governor noted that land matters were a peculiar to Laikipia that have seen many disputes end up in courts as they await conclusion.
“We are urging the judiciary to speed up the land matters before it so that justice is served so that Laikipians can carry on with their transactions with no obstacles.” Governor Muriithi said.
The JSC vice chair said that judiciary was upgrading the court system across the country by putting up bigger and modern courts to ensure justice is easily accessible.
She added that the Sh. 318 million ultra modern law courts complex in Nanyuki town would be complete and ready for use by the end of this year while another magistrate’s court would be put in Rumuruti Township.
“We are going round the country engaging court users so that their feedback will enable us make reasonable decisions that resonate with the local populations and affect how justice is served.” Ms. Deche said.
She added that Laikipia County had pledged to donate land in Rumuruti to put a magistrate’s court.
Other JSC Commissioners in attendance included Prof. Olive Mugenda, Felix Koskey and Prof. Tom Ojienda. The JSC team also met with local leaders and Advocates based in Nanyuki.
