Maasai Mara University Student drowns

The Maasai Mara University fraternity is mourning the death of a first-year student who drowned at River Narok, near the Narok GK prison last evening.

Narok County Police Commander John Kizito said the student was in the company of his two friends who had gone for a picnic at the river shores, when the tragic incident occurred.

He condoled with the family of the 26-year-old Political Science student and the university fraternity for the loss of a young man who had a bright future.

At the same time, the police boss warned the students and locals against going to swim at the river that has deep points where one can easily drown. “If possible, the students, especially the new students, should avoid going to swim at the river because some points are too deep,” he advised.

Maasai Mara University Dean of Students Mohamed Aden confessed that the river has claimed the lives of several varsity students who innocently go for picnics along the river only to drown in what seemed as shallow water.

The dean lamented that about six students have drowned in the same spot in a period of three years warning the new students against flocking the area.

He observed that though the river looks friendly, there is a deep black spot surrounded by huge stones in what seems as beautiful scenery attractive for photo taking.

“However calm the river might look during dry seasons, it takes the lives of more people than the rainy season when students keep off because of the raging waters,” he added.
