The Law society of Kenya Thika Chapter in partnership with the judiciary has held a legal awareness week at the Kenol law courts in Murang’a south.
The five-day exercise under the theme of Kenya’s electoral reforms and building confidence for the future aimed at extending legal literacy and awareness to members of the public by educating the community in Kenol and surrounding areas on how the judicial system works.
The team also enlightened members of public on the services they are entitled to receive from the court.
The advocate in charge of the legal awareness week at the Kenol law courts, Kirigo Wakori observed that the exercise is meant to create awareness of the courts existence and also to educate the community on what to expect when they seek judicial services.
“Currently majority of young people and the elderly do not understand the judicial process and what their rights are in the event that they are arrested and or taken to a court of law, this exercise therefore seeks to educate them on various aspects of the law and the judicial process,” she said.
Kirigo said that the public had been extensively informed on various aspects of the law including civic education, civil, criminal and family probate during the legal awareness week.
The Kenol law courts that was renovated by the Maragua constituency Local NG-CDF kitty at a cost of more than Sh.15 million in 2021 is expected to start operations soon and will serve Kabati, Sabasaba, Makuyu and Kenol police stations.
Having a court in Kenol was necessitated by a plea from residents who currently have to travel to the neighboring Kigumo sub county to access justice which is not only time consuming but also expensive.
The Kenol court increases the number of courts in the county to five.
