The Siaya Senator, James Orengo on Saturday said he had no apologies over his remarks that the Deputy President, William Ruto should be impeached for alleged corrupt activities.
Orengo, the Senate minority leader said he stood by his word and does not regret calling for the removal of Ruto over integrity issues.
He was speaking at Nyalweny market in West Ugenya location while campaigning for the Orange Democratic Movement candidate, Christopher Odhiambo Karan ahead of Ugenya parliamentary by-elections.
Orengo also called on National Assembly members to use powers bestowed on them by the constitution to impeach Cabinet Secretaries implicated in corruption.
He said it was unfortunate that the Constitution and the laws of the land gave powers to legislators to act against those pilfering public funds but the law makers keep on lamenting instead of using their powers to put a stop to the vice.
“I challenge members of the National Assembly not to wait for Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission or the Director of the Criminal Investigations to haul the suspects to court. The constitution empowers them to impeach Cabinet Secretaries who engage in impropriety.”
Addressing the rally, Ugunja MP, Opiyo Wandayi and his East Africa Legislative Assembly counterpart, Oburu Odinga called on President Uhuru Kenyatta not to be blackmailed into slowing down on the war against corruption.
Odinga said that if the President slowed down on the war against graft, his blossoming relationship with former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga will be affected. “I do not think Raila will agree to work with the President if he slows down on the war against graft,” said Oburu.
Other leaders who addressed the rally were Siaya women representative, Dr. Christine Ombaka, Suna West MP, Peter Masara, Gem and Alego / Usonga legislators, Elisha Odhiambo and Samuel Atandi respectively and a host of members of the County Assembly.
Ugenya voters go to the polls on Friday April 5 in a by-election occasioned by the nullification of the election of Karan by the Supreme Court over irregularities.
The polls have attracted four candidates; David Ouma of the movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG), Daniel Juma of the Grand Dream Development Party (GDDP), Brian Omondi of the Third Way Alliance and Christopher Odhiambo Karan of ODM.
