LSK south eastern branch initiates legal awareness week

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) South Eastern branch in partnership with the judiciary has launched legal awareness week to give free legal advice to those with pending cases in court.

Speaking at Machakos law courts during the launch of the legal awareness week, the chairman of LSK South Eastern branch Mutua Makau said that the goal of the legal week was to provide free legal assistance to the public and to help them understand how to proceed with their cases.

“Today we as advocates are elated for having a legal awareness week. The purpose of the legal awareness week is to give back to society by offering free legal advice, people are facing a lot of law issues and this week we as advocates are mandated to give back to society through free legal lead,” said Makau.

Makau also noted that the South Eastern Branch covers five counties which include Makueni, Kajiado, Kitui, Garissa, and Machakos, and consists of about 200 advocates who will give advice in accordance with the law.

Makau noted that each of these regions shall be having legal awareness week in every court station and encouraged members of the public to visit them and get free legal advice with their cases that are pending in court.

Florence Mwangangi, the former Machakos County Assembly speaker who is also an advocate said that the LSK is going to work closely with the court and with the law enforcement officers to ensure that the rights of children are protected as provided for in the constitution.

“Sexual abuse is said to be on the increase in this region, it’s not only affecting girls but also small boys are being assaulted, we are going to ensure that the rights of these children are protected,” said Mwangangi.

Mwangangi stated that Kituo cha Sheria, FIDA, and the public law institute which were collaborating with the LSK to give free service will cooperate with them as well.
