Police have confirmed that fifteen people died Wednesday morning following an accident involving a passenger bus and a lorry at Matuu town along the Garissa-Thika road, within Machakos County.
A senior police officer who requested anonymity confirmed to KNA that eleven men, three women and a male child died during the 4.30am accident which occurred after the bus rammed into a stationery lorry parked on the left side of the highway. “Several others were rushed to Matuu Level 4 hospital with various degrees of injuries,” he said.
According to the source the bus registration number KCM 912H and christened Medina, was travelling towards Nairobi from Mwingi area when it rammed into a truck registration number ZF 7443 parked off the left side of the road near a popular club.
The deaths bring to over 30 the number of people who have lost their lives on major roads involving PSV vehicles and trucks in the last five days. Last Friday, 11 passengers perished in Kikopey near Gilgil along the Nakuru-Nairobi road after a truck rammed into the matatu in which they were travelling. Tuesday, another six passengers died along Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Masimba when another truck collided with a matatu.
Police confirmed that they have commenced investigations into the cause of the Matuu accident.
