A 65 year old man is nursing a gunshot wound at the Maralal Referral Hospital, after he was shot on the leg by cattle rustlers at his house in Rangau Village in Maralal town.
Speaking to KNA on his hospital bed today morning, Hassan Lengoriani said that the bandits raided his home at 3am, Thursday morning, and made away with seven cows after shooting him on his right thigh, when he tried to fight them.
“I heard people outside my house trying to drive the cows outside the compound and when I attacked them using my spear one of them shot me,” he said.
Lengoriani said that he was taken to hospital 40 minutes later by his neighbours who were afraid to get out of their houses after hearing the gunshots.
Confirming the incident Samburu Central Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Titus Omanyi, said that Lengoriani suffered a flesh wound and he is in stable condition. “The bullet missed his thigh bone and artery and he is receiving treatment in stable condition,” he said.
The DCC added that the police who responded managed to recover one cow with the assistance of the National Police Reservists (NPR) adding that the General Service Unit (GSU) have been activated to reinforce in the tracking and recovery exercise.
Omanyi noted that the recent spate of insecurity in Maralal town is being conducted by newly crowned Morans after a recent traditional mass initiation exercise.
“Moranism is a stage in life and we are trying to reach them through the elders and their age set leaders whom they recognise, to ensure they maintain peace,” he said.
At the same time, Omanyi assured Maralal residents of their security, saying that day and night patrols have been intensified and a number of armed NPRs have been redeployed so response to a distress is not a challenge.
