Business closed, streets empty as Kenyans vote

Businesses remained closed Tuesday morning as Kenyans thronged various polling stations to vote for their preferred candidates in the General Elections.

In Kajiado town, shops, hotels, banks and other businesses remained shut with only a handful of people seen walking along the town’s main street.

At the Kajiado bus station travelers had a hard time commuting from one town to another as only a few matatus were in operation.

At the market, only few vendors were selling their wares with a majority of stalls closed.

The same scenes could be witnessed in Kitengela, Kiserian, Namanga and Mashuuru towns.

Alice Wambui, a vegetable vendor at Kajiado market said she woke up at 5:00am and went to vote at Kajiado Township Primary school so that she could open her business on time.

Wambui noted that the voting process was smooth and she managed to cast her vote in less than 10 minutes.

Amos Kulal, a Tuk Tuk operator in Kitengela town said business was a bit slow compared to normal days as many people had kept off the town with others traveling up-country to vote.

Kajiado County has a total of 463,273 registered voters across 5 constituencies.

Kajiado North has the highest number of registered voters (134,880) followed by Kajiado East (116,336), Kajiado West (75,173), Kajiado South (71,061) and Kajiado Central (65,823).
