Interior and Coordination of National Government Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has commended the high voter turnout and orderliness of the voting exercise this morning.
While casting his vote early today at Manga Girls PAG High School in Borabu Constituency of Nyamira County, Dr Matiang’i assured that security agents are on high alert to ensure the exercise is smooth.
He said queues indicated that people were willing to exercise their democratic right of electing leaders of their choice.
“I have been in constant communication with all my commissioners throughout the night to ensure we give IEBC all the support they require to conduct credible elections. So far, no serious security incident has been reported apart from the Wajir County standoff last evening which we have since resolved. It was not a security matter but an IEBC administrative issue,” the CS clarified.
“In places where polling materials had not arrived by yesterday, we have looked for an aerial escort which will aid in transporting the materials to all affected areas. Today we are getting instructions from IEBC on what we need to assist them with and we’ll do exactly that. All other matters relating to who does what to enable citizens vote smoothly is purely an IEBC role,” Dr. Matiang’i explained.
He stated that any offence, disturbance or malpractice which IEBC would want them to deal with shall be dealt with it in accordance with the law.
“We have a multi-agency security team overseeing the whole process in the whole country and where we have any security challenges, we shall handle it efficiently. So far so good it is a good start,” he added.
