The National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) Friday commissioned a 3 million staff house at the PCEA  Komothai Special School for the mentally Handicapped in  Githunguri Sub-County, Kiambu County.

The school which has enrolled 131 learners is among those that have benefited from the fund in Kiambu County.

Speaking during the event, NFDK chairperson Dr. Kristina Wambui Kenyatta Pratt said that institutions of learning should have general crisis plans in order to support learners safety.

“Staff house is very critical and when teachers are within the school the learners are assured of safety and they will be protected against abuse and danger”, she said.

Dr. Pratt added that the fund has also handed over two more projects in other institutions in Kiambu County which consists of a kitchen and Dining hall all now totaling Sh 10 million.

She urged parents who have children with disabilities to take them to such institutions where they can be taken care of.

“We urge all parents who have children living with disabilities to come out and seek help from government agencies. With the assistance from the National government we are able to assist as many people as we can and reach as many institutions as possible,” she added.

Dr Pratt further said that she will ensure that the school gets more teachers so that the learners can have the much needed attention from teachers.

Nancy Maina the Principal PCEA Komothai Special School for the mentally challenged thanked NFDK for the staff houses saying it is a relief since she will now be able to reside in the school and be able to carry out her duties with ease.

The fund has so far implemented 157 projects across the country and the program which started in 2009 goes towards infrastructural development in the institutions of learning which takes care of children with various disabilities.

NFDK works to enhance the social economic empowerment of persons with disabilities in Kenya by supporting individuals with disabilities with assistive devices and tools of trade towards their inclusion and economic empowerment.

More Specials schools have been urged to apply for grants which are disbursed by the National government so that they can benefit from the funds.
