Taxpayers sensitized on filing tax returns

Kenya Revenue Authority on Thursday sensitized taxpayers in the North Rift region on the importance of filing returns on time to avoid penalties that could be imposed on filing the returns late.

Speaking during the sensitization forum in Eldoret, the Chief Manager in charge of domestic returns in the North Rift region Francis Muiruri urged the business owners and employees to file their returns on time pointing out that there were about 1.2 million registered taxpayers in the region and about 500,000 only had filed the returns for the year 2021 which translates to less than 50 per cent of the targeted.

“It is important for every person to understand that the law requires one to file his returns before June 30. There are penalties for not filing the returns on time, as the law requires one to file returns even if it is late,” said Muiruri.

The Chief Manager pointed out that the authority had ensured proper mechanisms to enable individuals to file returns at their disposal via mobile phones and computers without necessarily visiting the KRA offices.

“I urge all to make efforts in future to try filing returns on time, because you have enough time from January to June 30, do not wait until the eleventh hour,” he said.

The Domestic taxes in-charge however appreciated Kenyans who had complied with the law by paying and filing their tax returns on time as a way to contribute to nation building.
