A total of 10,517 Inua Jamii cash transfer beneficiaries in Kajiado County have received Sh77.8 million under the social protection programme.
County Social Development Officer Jimmy Njau revealed that among the beneficiaries were 6,980 older persons, 3,173 orphaned and vulnerable children and 369 persons with severe disabilities.
Njau said each beneficiary received Sh8,000 which were arrears for two cycles running for the months of November- December 2021 and January-February 2022 payment cycles.
He added that the beneficiaries of the programme receive a monthly stipend of Sh2, 000 paid on a bi-monthly basis and payment for the remaining months March-June 2022 is expected to be disbursed soon.
“All the beneficiaries of the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer programme in all the five sub counties have received their funds in their bank accounts. The payments were for the months of July, August, September and October 2021.We are expecting to pay more arrears soon,” he said.
The officer said the funds were disbursed through the six contracted banks namely Cooperative Bank of Kenya Ltd, Equity Bank (Kenya) Ltd, KCB Bank Kenya Ltd, Kenya Post Office Savings Bank, National Bank of Kenya and Kenya Women Microfinance Bank.
Every beneficiary is expected to have an account with any of banks where they would be withdrawing the stipends.
Njau appealed to the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely so as to improve their social-economic status and live with dignity.
He urged those who have not withdrawn the cash to do so as it was intended to benefit them by improving their financial status.
The officer further urged the beneficiaries to invest some of the stipends on development projects so as to uplift their living standards.
The Inua Jamii cash transfer programme is a government initiative aimed at supporting the most vulnerable persons in the society.
It targets persons aged 70 years and above, orphans and vulnerable children as well as people living with severe disability who have no other income nor pension.
