Mbeere South MP Geoffrey King’ang’i’s wife Gladys Kingángí has embarked on a campaign of donating reusable sanitary pads and undergarments to girls in the constituency ahead of school opening in May.
The initiative, she said, was aimed at ensuring that girls in the area, the majority of whom come from poor homes, were forced to skip school during their menses for lack of the essential menstrual hygiene products.
Speaking on Tuesday while donating dignity kits to girls at AIC Beram Gachuriri Primary School, Mrs. King’ang’i said without constant provision of sanitary towels, many girls run the risk of becoming victims of absenteeism and potential school drop outs.
“We want our teenage girls to remain in school comfortable and confident during their menses,” Mrs. King’ang’i said, adding the programme also targets adolescent girls who may have dropped out of school for one reason or another.
The donation saw every girl get a kit comprising four reusable pads that could be washed between uses for up to one year plus an under garment, with the donor saying the pack was enough to ensure girls stay in school all year round.
She called upon like-minded individuals and organizations to join the initiative aimed at ensuring the dignity of the girl child is maintained despite their economic status.
