The national government has completed 117 out of the 309 flagship projects initiated in the Nyanza region during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime.
These initiatives and projects are in line with the Kenya Vision 2030 and the Big Four Agenda meant to turn around the lives of Kenyans.
In the past decade, the national government has injected Sh208 billion into Kisumu County for the 46 completed programmes out of the 78 projects that were started in the county, putting Kisumu ahead of other counties in the region in terms of infrastructural development.
The Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) National Treasury and Planning Eric Simiyu said the government has put top priority on infrastructural investment in Kisumu as a Special Economic Zone to promote the industrial economy.
Simiyu was speaking at the Tom Mboya Labour College on Wednesday where he officiated the opening of the 10th Kenya National Monitoring and Evaluation week conference on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary Amb. Ukur Yatani.
The CAS exuded confidence that the country is on the right track to achieving a sustainable growth trajectory of 10 per cent and the realization of the vision 2030.
Mr. Jared Buoga of President’s Delivery Unit (PDU) speaking at the event said Kisumu has witnessed tremendous achievements following the completion of key projects, despite the Covid-19 outbreak, which posed a major setback economically.
He highlighted a number of government projects the team monitors in the county including the rehabilitation of the port at a cost of Sh3 billion, an additional Sh450 million to establish a marine academy in the region to boost capacity at the revived port and operations in Lake Victoria, the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Ahero – Kisii Road and the establishment of a trauma center in Kisumu.
In addition, the Lakeside County has witnessed the completion of the Sh600 million Ultra-Modern Uhuru Business Park Market Complex and the renovation of the 216-kilometer meter-gauge railway line among others.
