Kakamega County Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has commissioned Sh80 million Lwakhupa Water Project that will serve over 20,000 homesteads in Navakholo Sub County and its environs.
He said so far Sh46 million has been used on the project adding that already 65 homes, three schools and a police post have been connected to clean and safe water.
“This project will be producing 15 million litres of water per day. This will be adequate water to be supplied to residents of Navakholo, Mumias East, Mumias West and parts of Butere Sub Counties,” explained Oparanya.
The Governor noted that access to water is a basic and constitutional right for every Kenyan saying the county government is committed in ensuring all residents are connected to the commodity.
Oparanya noted that in a bid to ensure that residents living in rural areas access clean tap water, his government has established the Kakamega County Rural Water and Sanitation Company, whose core mandate is to ensure that the goal is realized.
He said that his administration has constructed other water projects at Musembe in Lugari, Kuvasali in Malava, Shinyalu and Ikolomani to boost provision of water to residents from the areas.
“This is our first project to be launched under Amatsi Khumukuru programme. We are investing resources in water sector to ensure every citizen has clean and safe water as per my promise during my campaigns,” he said.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Rhodah Masaviru said Lwakhupa Water Project is one of the key projects in the County, which will help deal with shortage of the commodity in the area.
“We want to cushion residents especially women from the burden of walking long distances to fetch water. This project will be producing adequate water for residents,” she said.
Mumias West MP Johnson Naicca, County Secretary and Head of Public Service James Ochami, CECMs, Chief Officers, MCAs led by Kennedy Kilwake, Chairperson County Public Service Board Catherine Omueno, CEOs led by Christabel Ashiono (KACWASCO), Board members among other officers were present.
