‘Mama Pack’ incentives launched to motivate expectant mothers

The County Government of Busia has rolled out “Mama Pack” incentives to motivate more expectant mothers to deliver in public hospitals.

The initiative which is part of Governor Sospeter Ojaamong’s effort to ensure good health and reduction of mortality rate is provided through the Transforming Health Systems (THS) programme.

The County Reproductive Health Coordinator Magdaline Ikaal, said the package which includes baby basin, jelly and a pack of diapers, targets to encourage expectant mothers to attend antenatal clinics and deliver in health facilities.

Speaking at the Health offices in Busia town, Ikaal noted that among other factors, the availability of improved health facilities across the County has taken services closer to residents, making it easier for mothers to access maternal services.

“Apart from the enhanced workforce, the Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) have also played an important role in educating mothers at the household level on the importance of skilled delivery,” she added.

She emphasized the need for expectant mothers to attend clinics in order to address any arising complications during pregnancy period.

While expressing their gratitude to the county government, Marion Nabwire, one of the beneficiaries, a resident of Bukhalalire in Butula Sub County, applauded the effort by county administration for providing them with the unique package.

“We have been educated by the health officers at the maternity hospital on the need to visit hospitals to minimize chances of complications,” said Nabwire, who delivered her second born.

Statistics from the Kenya Health Information System (KHIS) indicate that skilled delivery in Busia County has recorded a steady upward trend from 53.3 percent in 2014 to 70.3 per cent in 2021.

Previously, expectant mothers resorted to delivering at home through traditional birth attendants due to challenges ranging from difficulty in transport and high cost of medication, a situation that resulted in maternal and neonatal mortality.

Ojaamong’s administration has strived to bring services closer to residents by ensuring that public hospitals have modern facilities among them theatres, laboratories, maternity, wards and equipment besides increasing staff.
