Nurses in Nyeri call off strike

Nurses in Nyeri County called off their seven- day strike on Tuesday, giving a sigh of relief to many patients who were suffering in public health facilities.

The strike was called off after fruitful deliberations between the county government and officials from the Nyeri branch of Kenya National Union of Nurses(KNUN).

This comes a day after Governor Mutahi Kahiga threatened to recruit new nurses if they continued to defy calls by his government

In a joint press briefing, Mutahi said that as the Labour strike comes to an end, the county administration will fully honour its side of bargain once Salaries Review Commission (SRC) issues the much needed advisory.

However, he hoped that the yet to be issued SRC guidelines will favour the county that is currently struggling with a huge wage bill.

The two parties anchored their statement of consensus that terminated the strike to the official position that will be taken by salaries body on the issues they are agitating for and related to a pay rise.

The  Nyeri Branch Union Secretary, Beatrice Nduati said that they have agreed to return to work with the promise that the County will make a follow up and be ready to implement guidelines that will be issued by SRC.
