The government is introducing relevant programs in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions in Western Kenya to align with the current industry needs.
The TVET Director in charge of the region consisting of Kakamega, Vihiga, Kisumu and Siaya Joseph Sunguti said the programs are being introduced as the government expands TVET centers into constituencies.
“The state department is very clear right from 2013 on increasing access to training and equity,” he pointed out.
He said that the initiative is being backed up by various industry players who participated in the Curriculum Development Mechanism for TVETs so that once trainees graduate they can get employed easily.
“Relevance is an attribute to the directorate to ensure that the trainees acquire skills that are relevant to the job opportunities that are available. It is not just a question of training people and leaving them to look for jobs. We impart relevant skills so that when they finish training at least an employer can take on them,” he noted.
Sunguti was speaking after opening the Western Regional TVET athletics championships at Eregi Teachers Training College in Kakamega that will last for three days.
He noted that 24 institutions are participating as a result of the establishment of TVET centres in constituencies. Initially, only eight institutions participated during the championships.
The Regional Director noted that the TVET Directorate cherishes holistic training by encouraging outdoor activities like sports.
