County to build playgrounds to nurture talents

We have elaborate plans to revive and support sports activities in Tana River County, area Governor Dhadho Godhana has said.

Admittedly, Godhana said that they hadn’t prioritized volleyball in the county to be able to compete with other established teams in Kenya.

He said: “As a county we have lagged in playgrounds which can be used for training. You know we have started with the Hola town playground; we still don’t have a stadium. We are working around the clock to construct a stadium and we have plans to have different playgrounds for all sports. Volleyball, netball, football, and basketball are in our plans.’’

Godhana further revealed that Tana River Innovation and Empowerment Centre will have all the playgrounds for youth to nurture talents.

“In the past, we have constructed public playgrounds in each ward. Our objective is to empower and nurture talents. Sports create employment and remove idleness,’’ said the governor while urging Tana youth to actively participate in sports.

The governor flagged off the Hola volleyball team on Friday at Hola Primary School grounds. The team is scheduled to take part in a volleyball tournament in Voi, Taita-Taveta County.

Captain of the Hola volleyball male team Innocent Manase appreciated the governor’s financial support as they headed to Voi. He exuded confidence that the team will carry the day in the tournament.

“We thanked the governor for sponsoring us and we won’t let our supporters down. We will get exposure in the tournament,’’ said Manase.

The volleyball team recently won the Cleophus Ojiambo tournament that was held in Kilifi County. The team was formed in 2019, its members are drawn from the community, civil servants, and religious leaders.

Hola Volley club was formed in 2019 and comprises security officers, civilians, and religious leaders, the club has three teams, two male and one female.

The team participated in inter-counties, last month and scooped the first position out of 16 teams in the Cleophus Ojiambo tournament held at Vitengeni Baptist Secondary School in Ganze Sub- County, Kilifi.
