About 1500 household in Laikipia central are set to benefit from a Sh 100 million water project in three months’ time.
According to area Deputy County Commissioner Joshua Marete the project which is funded by the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) is set to transverse through Kahuruko, Kijabe, Munyaka, Withare, Kiandege, Sumbego, Wamura, Makutano and Matopeni villages in the Sub county.
Marete said that the project which is 95 per cent complete will go a long way in serving residents in the vast sub-county by reducing the burden of walking long distances in search of clean drinking water.
“This is a community project that was started 16 years ago and has since faced untold challenges before it was taken over by the government through the NIA two years ago and handed over to Yellow House Ltd to a tune of Sh 100 million.”
“The project is set to offer water connectivity to about 1500 households and also help some farmers practice irrigation,” said the DCC.
Marete urged local residents to make good use of the project through irrigation and other domestic use to help them net high commercially.
The DCC who was speaking during an election exercise for a new management committee that will oversee the completion of the project called upon the new caretaker committee to ensure the project is properly managed in order to serve its purpose.
“We are calling upon the newly elected committee to fully own the project and ensure that it serves its intended purpose after completion and also manage the project to the latter,” he said.
