Project committee calls for implementation of Gov’t projects

The Migori County Committee charged with analysing and evaluating progress of National programmes and projects in the region now want heads of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to be proactive in their assignments.

The County Development Implementation Coordination Committee (CDICC) warned today that it would not tolerate officers who sleep on their jobs leading to unnecessary cases of projects failing to complete in time.

Committee Chairman Mr. Michael Mwangi Meru, while leading members in discussing various projects being implemented within the county, regretted that some officers have been ignoring timelines slotted for projects under them prompting their assignments to lag behind schedules.

Meru who is also the area County Commissioner called for unwavering support from all officers directly or indirectly connected with particular projects implementation asking them to respond promptly whenever they are called for an assignment.

Consequently, the chairman asked those committees implementing the schools infrastructural development under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC)  to wake up to the urgent call of putting up good classrooms as specified in the tender documents.

“Those monitoring and evaluating the works must ensure that the best is achieved in order to give taxpayers value for their money,” stressed Meru.

He said it would be a serious crime for the officers to collude with contractors to do shoddy work at the expense of learners who are to use the classrooms.

A spot-check in the region last week showed that work to construct 365 new classrooms in 237 secondary schools across the eight sub counties had started in earnest. The region will spend Sh284, 050,300 to implement the project by the end of the two phases of the programme.

“The state has provided the needed resources and now we want people to exert their energies and experience to help come up with the best classrooms for our children,” Meru said

Other ongoing national projects and programmes in the region, including roads, dams, health facilities and equipment – worth billions of shillings are at various completion stages and required serious monitoring to achieve good results.

For instance, the multi-billion Kisii-Migori-Isebania high-way under serious improvement is almost 90 per cent complete and would open up the corridor for serious business once fully done.

“There are other numerous roads like Mabera-Motemorabu, Nyabohanse-Masaba, Kehancha-Ntimaru and Masara – Sori –Agolomuok roads that will greatly boost development in the region by making rural set ups accessible by the business communities and farmers,” noted the chairman.

He said the region was also likely to face a glut in tourism business once the Migori Airstrip, currently undergoing serious facelift and expansion, would be complete.

Migori being a gateway to the famous Maasai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti Game Park stands a chance to receive more tourists heading to the parks through the Airstrip.
