Leaders call for peace ahead of August polls

A section of leaders and politicians from Garissa County have called for peaceful campaigns ahead of the August 9 General Elections.

Speaking in Alinjugur during the unveiling of the newly created Fafi sub county, the leaders urged those seeking political seats to restrain themselves from making utterances that could jeopardize peaceful co-existence among various communities.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji asked citizens not to be incited into causing violence by selfish politicians. “Do not be incited by anyone to cause violence. It is you and your children who will suffer at the end. We all sit in Nairobi together for a cup of tea, our children know each other and so do not let political differences during campaigns push you to violence,” Haji advised adding Islamic teachings provide guidelines on peaceful co-existence with neighbors.

He said each of the aspirants had unique skills which can be used to uplift the lives of the people adding, “A win by one aspirant will be a win for all of us.’’

The DPP comments came the same day he ordered for the investigations into sentiments made by Meru Senator Mithika Linturi at a rally organized by DP William Ruto’s on Saturday. Linturi was later arrested on Sunday morning by detectives at Eka Hotel, Eldoret, and is set to be arraigned in a Nakuru court today.

On his part, Garissa Governor Ali Korane also called for political tolerance during the campaign period.

Meanwhile, North Eastern Regional Commissioner Nicodemus Ndalana said that over 12,000 identity cards for Garissa County have been processed and will be issued to owners in the coming weeks.

Ndalana called on residents to come out and register as voters during the second phase of Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise which is set to begin on January 17 and end on February 6 this year.

Among leaders who attended the function are MPs Abdikarim Osman (Fafi), Mohamed Dahiye (Dadaab), Abdi Omar Shurie (Balambala), Garissa Woman Rep Anab Subow, Nominated Senator Farhiya Haji Ali, Kenyan Ambassador to Botswana Mohamed Shidiye and Former Garissa Governor Nadhif Jamaa.
