David Shungea and Mary Nyaruai retained their senior men and women Nyandarua Cross Country titles, respectively, during the County championships held in Ol kalou at the weekend.
Shungea, running for Ndaragwa sub county charged in front in the second lap to win the 10km race in 30:14.9, ahead of his closest rival Michael Kamau.
“The race was tough because of the wind but I was well prepared since I am familiar with the course,” Shungea said after the race on Saturday.
The runner from Kajiado said he wants to put his home County on the world map as a top road runner in the future.
Marathoner Michael Kamau who was third in the recent Nakuru City half marathon finished second in Ol kalou clocking 30:27.5. He was followed by his Ol Joroorok sub county teammate Alex Kipchirchir in 30:37.0.
The event held at Ol Kalou Arboretum, in Ol Kalou town, was meant to select a County team to the Central Region championship slated for Kerugoya in Kirinyaga County on January 8th.
Joseph Macharia clocked 30:47.4, Stanley Njihia 30:54.6 and Peter Kamau 31:01.0 finished in that order for position four to six respectively, qualifying to represent the county
Ms Nyaruai, running for Ndaragwa sub county, won the senior women 10km event in 35:28.2, ahead of Pauline Eapan of Ol Joroorok 35:49.3, Zipporah Wanjiru 36:25.1, Evaline Maraba 37:04.5, Jacinta Nyokabi 37:27.6 and Yvonne Chepchirchir 38:02.2.
Boys Under-20 results for 8km were; Samuel Kibaki 23:47.5, Richard Etir 23:49.2 and Raphael Longisa 24:11.6.
Under-20 Girls 6km was won by Margaret Ekalale in 21:31.7, a head of Margaret Ngoiri and Purity Muringe who clocked 21:57.3 and 22:09.9 for second and third positions respectively.
