Siaya County in talks over construction of a bridge

Siaya County Government is in talks with the National Government over the construction of a bridge that will connect Alego/Usonga and Ugenya sub counties at Kalkada, Deputy Governor, Dr James Okumbe has said.

Okumbe said that talks were at an advanced stage to have the link that will save the public time and long-distance travel, accomplished before the end of the tenure of the current government.

He was speaking at the county headquarters when he officially launched the county legacy magazine.

The Deputy Governor said that the county has, in the last nine years, managed to open up and maintain over 2000 kilometres of roads, with plans to tarmac the Siaya – Sirembe and Bondo – Opoda farm roads on the pipeline.

Okumbe, who was flanked by the County Secretary, Joseph Ogutu, and executive committee members said the county had made strides in several sectors such as sports where the construction of a modern stadium in Siaya town was almost complete.

“In health, the rate of skilled delivery has improved from 38 per cent in 2013 to 72 per cent currently,” he noted and attributed this to the efforts by the county government to construct and operationalize dispensaries in each sub location.

Okumbe further disclosed that water coverage has improved, with 60 per cent of the residents having access to clean and portable water.

“All market centres, health facilities and schools will have access to clean water by 2022,” said the Deputy Governor who hailed the partnership with other stakeholders such as the national government and international partners.
