13 passengers Injured in Road Accident

Some 13 people are fighting for their lives at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, MTRH Eldoret after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident along Eldoret-Webuye highway this morning.

Their 14 seater vehicle was travelling from Maili Nne estate to Eldoret town when it collided with an oncoming truck at Flyover area along the highway.

According to Rodgers Mamuli who witnessed the accident, the passengers including the matatu driver and his conductor sustained serious injuries during the 11.30 am incident that led to a traffic snarl up for more than two hours.

He claimed that the lorry driver was speeding when he lost control of his lorry ramming into the matatu, “passengers in the matatu were trapped and Jua Kali artisans were forced to break the doors and windows to free them,” he said

Eldoret West OCPD Zachary Bittock said the passengers escaped death by a whisker going by the impact of the accident.

Bittock said the truck driver was arrested and will be arraigned in court if found culpable for the accident.

Residents of Maili Nne and Road Block have now appealed to the government to erect bumps at the accident terming it a black spot.

A senior medic at MTRH said they received 13 accident victims, four of whom were in critical condition, but out of danger as the hospital staff were working hard to save their lives.
