The Government has injected Sh36, 248,000 million in construction of 46 Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) classrooms in 28 public secondary schools in Belgut Sub-County within Kericho County.
Speaking to Kenya News Agency during the unveiling of a new science laboratory at Sosiot Girls Secondary School, Belgut Sub-County Director of Education, Mr Charles Anyika, said it is all systems go and a committee has already been formed to oversee the implementation of the project.
The Sub-County Director of Education also said that by April 2022, all the 46 CBC classrooms would be ready for use adding that Sosiot Girls Secondary School would get three such classrooms.
“We have noted that Sosiot Girls Secondary School is very disciplined and hardworking and the three CBC classrooms will be beneficial to the students in addition to the just-launched laboratory. In our Sub-County, measures have been put in place to avert students’ unrests and we urge all students to focus on their studies and avoid being influenced negatively,” Mr Anyika stressed.
Meanwhile Finlay’s Community Trust Vice-Chair, Amb Joshua Terer, who officially opened the science laboratory revealed that the Trust had spent Sh5.15 million to construct it over a period of eight months.
Amb Terer pointed out that the State of Art lab would enable students to conduct their biology, physics, and chemistry experiments with efficiency owing to the well-equipped modern facilities.
“With this new modern laboratory, we expect an improvement in the performance of sciences and produce women professionals in the science fields of study. I also encourage students to stick to good moral values and embrace the mission and vision of the school as personal goals and utilize school resources in improving performances,” said Amb Terer.
Also at the event was the James Finlay Kenya Limited Corporate Affairs General Manager, Sammy Kirui, who explained to the students the opportunities available to them through the Finlays’ scholarships and encouraged them to try out their luck.
“Every year, two candidates qualify for Masters Scholarships; 28 students qualify for the undergraduate category and 20 students in secondary schools are eligible for a scholarship from both Kericho and Bomet counties,” said Kirui.
The Finlay’s General Manager in charge of Tea Estates, Mr Wesley Bosuben, also encouraged the students to work hard and smart and apply for the scholarships which covered tuition fees and stipend for accommodation and basic living costs for the term of the course.
He further said the recently, launched Finlay’s Community Trust, will enhance funding for all programmes including scholarships noting that funding available for secondary school and local universities has been increased from Sh12.3 million to Sh23.1 million per year.
The Trust has so far invested over Sh220 million to support the development and improve the lives of communities in Kericho and Bomet Counties.
Sosiot Girls Secondary School Chief Principal, Ms Esther Kaptingei, promised to take good care of the laboratory and make good use of it to improve the school performance in sciences to a mean grade of 7.5.
