Gov’t allocates over Sh31 million to classrooms

The Ministry of Education has identified 31 learning institutions in Marsabit County to benefit from the Competent Based Curriculum (CBC) infrastructure funding.

County Director of Education (CDE) Apollo Apuko, said the government has allocated Sh 31,520,000 to facilitate the construction of 40 classrooms at the identified secondary schools.

Mr Apuko told KNA in his office that preparations for the take-off of the project were in top gear adding that modalities of identifying contractors at the sub-county level were in progress.

The CDE said that the additional classrooms would enable about 1600 students across the county to be absorbed come April next year.

“The timeline is very tight because the required infrastructure is supposed to be ready before April next year in order to ensure that the new education system advances without any hiccups,” he said.

At the same time, Mr Apuko disclosed that the ministry was exploring the possibility of starting a secondary school in the far-flung Illeret location of North Horr Sub-County in order to address the plight of local students.

He said that the nearest secondary school is located in the Dukana area which is about 180 kilometers away, a distance he observed as deterring.

The classrooms to be built under the economic stimulus package announced by President Kenyatta on Mashujaa Day would each consume Sh788, 000.

The CDE said the major factor that led to the consideration of the identified institutions was how rich its catchment area was in terms of primary schools that would off-load students to it next year.
