Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has launched the County Health Facilities Fund in a bid to boost efficiency in health sector.
Oparanya said all monies collected in the health facilities across the county would be channeled to the Fund and the same ploughed back to the hospitals to enable them operate effectively.
The governor, who spoke while commissioning a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the County Referral Hospital, said the move was prompted by the need to have a steady source of funding for health services.
He stated that the 10-bed ICU was set up to the tune of Sh 130 million and brings the total capacity to 19 beds.
The county head explained that with the upsurge in the coronavirus infections, the facility will go a long way in boosting the capacity of the county to tackle the pandemic.
The county government is installing an oxygen plant with a capacity of producing 1,000 litres of oxygen per hour which once operational will also serve the neighbouring counties.
He called upon the health facilities management committees to ensure efficient utilization of funds and other resources so as to provide quality services to the residents.
