An Inclusive Homebased Early Learning Programme (IHELP) has been launched in Ikolomani Sub-County in Kakamega County.
The project, the first of its kind in Kenya, is sponsored by a Canada-based organisation the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the International Research Development Centre Canada (IDRC) in collaboration with the Kakamega County government and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
The Kakamega County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for education George Lutomia says three more homebased learning cum play-based model centres would be set up so that each of the four wards in the Sub-County has its own.
He stated that IHELP aims at increasing access to quality Equitable Early Childcare and Education (ECCE) for children with complex disabilities, living in poverty and those in less accessible areas.
Lutomia lauded GPE, MMUST and IDRC for introducing the concept observing that it will enhance equitable learning.
The CECM said they will ensure a conducive learning environment for the young ones through construction of the necessary infrastructure, employing competent teachers and providing furniture.
Dr. Rose Opiyo, from the department of educational psychology at MMUST, stated that the centres will help in keeping young learners in school in addition to giving mothers an opportunity to focus on other activities.
