Judges’ questioning: CJ speaks

Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome has assured all Judges and Judicial officers that the independence of the Judiciary and their constitutional duties are protected by the Constitution and urged them to continue discharging their duties without any fear in accordance with their oath of office.

Koome said that she had been briefed by Justices Aggrey Muchelule and Said Juma Chitembwe on details of their arrest yesterday.

In a press statement on Friday, Koome said “The two Judges have notified me that they recorded statements at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters following a search of their chambers at the Milimani Law Courts.”

“However, no formal report has been made to me as the Head of the Judiciary or the Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission. The arrest of the two Judges has caused anxiety among Judges and Judicial Officers,” said the CJ.

She noted that the matter has been filed at the High Court and any comments on it are inappropriate. “I will await findings of the investigations and at the opportune time, make a full statement,” she said.
