A form two student at Ikawa Mixed Secondary school in Chuka Igambang’ombe constituency early Monday allegedly gave birth within the school compound and threw the baby boy into a pit latrine.
Luckily the newborn was retrieved from the 20-feet deep latrine by County government and Kenya Red cross rescue teams and rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital for check-up together with the suspected mother.
This was after students raised an alarm on seeing a blood stained mattress outside the latrine and then hearing a child crying from inside it.
“Some of our officers descended inside the latrine where the boy had been trapped and managed to rescue him.” Alex Mugambi, the Kenya Red cross team manager told reporters.
Mugambi said there was a trail of blood and a stained mattress outside the latrine showing that the girl could have given birth there.
A nurse at the facility who declined to be named because she is not authorized to speak to the media said the infant was in good health.
Area OCPD Benson Makumbi said investigations were ongoing adding the student remains the main suspect unless proved otherwise at the hospital.
