At least 144 pupils in Bukalama Primary School in Busia Sub County cannot begin lessons after they were displaced when a roof of their classroom was ripped off by a strong wind last year.
Speaking to the press at the school’s compound on Thursday, Steven Otieno Okello, the school’s head teacher said that the incident that occurred on the night of December 29, 2018 has left the institution with a big challenge.
Otieno stated that the classroom used to accommodate standard four pupils who have now been forced to relocate to another classroom meant for standard five pupils.
“We are requesting for assistance from the government, political leaders or NGOs ,” he said..
He disclosed that the school has an enrolment of 1,166 learners with the most populated class being standard one with 156 pupils.
The head teacher further said that all the teachers have reported for the first term adding that pupils’ attendance was comparatively low.
“I think the poor attendance might have been caused by uncertainty about the teachers strike, but I believe the number will increase from tomorrow,” he said.
All primary and secondary schools across the country were scheduled to re-open on Thursday amid fears of an impending teachers’ strike.
