Kenya National Private Security Workers Union Secretary General (KNPSWU) Isaac Andabwa has appealed to the national government to fast-track the implementation of proposed reforms in the private security sector to allow guards to be armed with firearms.
He said this on Tuesday after visiting Situma Sitikho, a survivor of last week’s attack by thugs at Kivaywa Boys High School in Lugari Sub County that left three guards dead.
Situma, who was rushed to Webuye County Hospital in critical condition, is now said to be out of danger.
The thugs raided the school on Wednesday and made away with a TV set, laptop, public address equipment (PAE) and cash all valued at Sh150, 000, according to Matete Sub County Police Commander (SCPC) Thomas Ototo.
Andabwa said proper vetting and training of the guards would guarantee responsible use of the firearms for their own safety as they provide security to properties.
He suggested that out of a given number of personnel on duty at an institution, office or compound at a given time, one should have a gun.
