Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has distanced itself from a teachers’ strike being called by Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) over teachers’ transfers and lack of promotions.
Laikipia Kuppet branch Executive Secretary and Mount Kenya Teachers’ Forum spokesperson Mr. Ndung’u Wangenye on Sunday called on teachers to ignore the strike scheduled to begin on January 2, 2019 saying KUPPET was not party to it.
Wangenye said that the union has directed its affiliated teachers to report to their respective working stations when schools reopen on Thursday January 3,2019.
“We want to give an assurance to the parents and guardians not to fear to take back their children to school when schools reopen. We have instructed our teachers to report back to their respective work stations. Teachers from our union and those under the Mount Kenya Teachers’ Forum will not be participating in the strike,” he said in Nyahururu town.
Wangenye maintained that delocalisation and other issues that have been raised by Knut can be handled through talks. “Teachers do not need to go on strike. For instance in my county, Laikipia only 10 school heads have been transferred and out of the 10 only three have issues with delocalisation,” he noted.
“Thus you don’t need to tell over 5,000 teachers in Laikipia County to go on strike because three head teachers who have been delocalised are having issues with transfers,” added the unionist.
He said there were more important issues that affect teachers that Knut need to address among them the new CBA, the medical cover scandal and job stagnation.
