The Turkana University College has kick-started the process of filling the vacancies in the posts of principal and deputy principal positions.
The varsity which is a constituent college of Masinde Muliro University has placed advertisements on local dailies and its website requiring the interested candidates to submit their applications to the Public Service Commission before June 22, 2021.
The Council of Turkana University College in August appointed Prof. George Chemining’wa to head the institution in an acting capacity. Prof. Chemining’wa took over from Prof. Fredrick Kassily who had been the acting principal. The previous principal Prof. Thomas Akunja was sent on compulsory leave in January to pave way for investigation into alleged financial irregularities.
Prof. Cheminingw’a has been serving on a six months renewable contract. Prof. Akuja has however moved to court challenging his ouster.
Prior to his appointment, Prof. Chemining’wa was a professor of agronomy and dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Nairobi.
“We want to stabilize this institution so when we come here again, we don’t only discuss the problems of the institution but also discuss the development, the growth of students, staff, the community and the country,” Chairman of the Turkana University Council Solomon Muchina said on August 11,2020.
Turkana University College (TUC) Council appointed Prof. George Muthaa as the Ag. Deputy Principal, Administration, Finance and Planning (AFP) to replace Prof. Stephen Odebero who proceeded on terminal leave from December 11, 2020 to January 30, 2021 after which he resumed his duties at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
Among the qualifications of the principal are; he must be a full professor with an earned PhD degree from a university recognized in Kenya, has at least 10 years academic and research experience at senior level and demonstrated leadership and management skills in an academic or research institution.
The Deputy Principal in Charge of Administration, Finance and Planning will be required to be a full or an associate professor with an earned PhD degree from a university recognized in Kenya. He/she must have had at least eight years of academic and research experience with scholarly record demonstrated by publication in internationally peer reviewed journals in their areas of specialization and supervision of masters and doctoral students.
