Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education(KCSE) candidates from Migori County who will score straight “As’’ will be awarded Sh100000 prize each year until they complete their university education, County Governor Zachary Obado has said.
Obado said he was proud that Migori County produced the best KCSE candidate nationally and several others among top best one hundred.
He noted that Irene Otieno, the country’s best from Migori will be the first beneficiary among other top performers in the region.
Obado revealed that awarding exceptional KCSE performers is another way of boosting their morale and encouraging hard work among other candidates.
The Governor was speaking while launching Sh20 million to 200 best and needy KCSE students from the County who will be joining form one from next week.
He challenged students to pursue their dream courses as the world needs their services after completion of their studies.
Obado said since 2014 under the ‘Governors Scholarship Program’ the county has enrolled over 800 bright and needy students with the first beneficiaries sitting for their KCSE this year.
Out of 149 candidates under the program 106 scored direct entry grades to the university.
In a move seen as strengthening the bursary award among bright and needy students, Obado directed the department of education to draft county education policy which will guide the distribution of funds and other form of benefits to the needy groups, including the disabled candidates.
Speaking during the function, Otieno, the best national KCSE candidate urged form one students joining school early next year to work hard as success belongs to those who work for it.
She challenged them to follow their dreams however big they may be, since it was the only way of boosting their morale while studying.
Otieno, formerly of Pangani Girls emerged top in 2018 KCSE exams and wants to be Aeronautical Engineer.
Yet another student, Mel Christine of Alliance Girls also from Rongo was the sixth best students nationally with a mean score of 84 points.
