Homa Bay County Diaspora Community Spearheads tree planting project

Homa Bay County Diaspora Community (HBC) leaders through their tree planting project dubbed, One Child One Tree have embarked on a project aimed at improving the county’s total forest coverage.

This initiative is expected to transform the landscape of the county and attain the 10 per cent forest cover required by the government from the current 2.61 per cent.

The project aims at involving churches in achieving their goal through distribution and planting of tree seedlings.

Led by the project’s coordinator Ben Osiemo, the association has planted trees at Kojwach Primary School in Kasipul Kabondo Constituency.

These were part of 1,500 tree seedlings donated by the association to be divided amongst 12 churches in Kojwach Ward.

Speaking to KNA, Osiemo pointed out that the move is to ensure the association plants a total of five million trees by the end of this year through donation of seedlings to all the eight sub counties in the county.

The diaspora community programme has implemented the exercise in Kabondo Kasipul, Rangwe, Homa Bay town, Suba, Mbita and Karachuonyo Sub Counties.

“The afforestation of the county will lead to increased food production and annual rainfall, while at the same time reducing the occurrence of floods and seasonal droughts,” said Osiemo.
