University students protest over death of colleague

Hundreds of Maasai Mara University students took to the streets of Narok town on Tuesday to express their anger after one of their own was killed in a road accident near the William Ole Ntimama Stadium in Narok town on Monday night.

The students marched from the University gate that is located about two kilometers from Narok town, chanting slogans meant to rebuke motorists for being less vigilant while driving along the highway before the anti-riot police using tear gas dispersed them.

The demonstrations were triggered by the death of an 18-year-old student by the name Faith Chelangat, who died on the spot after she fell off from a motorcycle she was riding on.

Led by the students’ Secretary General, Davis Wekesa, the students demanded the police to be more cautious to curb the reckless driving that caused death within the town.

“We are holding peaceful demonstrations to stand with one of our own who died in a road accident last night. This thing is so painful and that is why we are on the street protesting,” he said.

They called on the police to arrest and prosecute the cyclists who caused the accident last night as he was currently on the run.

The student’s President, Humphrey Omollo, wondered why the police had to use tear gas to disperse them yet they were holding a peaceful demonstration around the town to remind the motorists that they have to be vigilant while using the road.

“We want to take this message to the Boda boda operators and motorists to be very careful on the road because we the students are the main users of the motorbikes. We came here to remind them that they must be careful when carrying us,” reiterated the student.

Narok North Sub-County Police Commander, Frederick Siundu, confirmed that the motorbike rider was on the wrong side of the road when causing the accident.

“The rider was carrying two people when the accident occurred which is not allowed and was riding on the wrong side of the road,” he said.
