Two Students Drown on X-mass Day

A Christmas party on the beach turned tragic last Tuesday when two students from Pwani University drowned at the peak of the festivities.

The two student drowned in two separate incidents in Kilifi township location, Kilifi County as they enjoyed  a swimming session at Bofa beach and Makuti villas resort respectively on Christmas day.

A second year students who was on recess barely a week ago after the institution went for the Christmas break met his fate after he reportedly opted not to travel to their upcountry homes and instead settled for the coastal towns during the festivities.

The two students, Chruzze Mtsoli and David Mungare Nyamboga met their deaths as the former was swimming in the Indian Ocean at Baobab beach while the latter was swimming at the resort’s swimming pool.

Kilifi OCPD Mr. Patrick Njoroge who confirmed the drowning of the two said Mtsoli had gone to Baobab beach to swim with friends at around 5.00pm when he was washed off by strong waves after the water became rough.

He said the body was recovered on the same day at 8.00pm by fishermen and was taken to Kilifi County hospital mortuary for post mortem examination.

On the second incident, Mungare decided to swim at the Makuti villas swimming pool at around mid-day as he waited for lunch after leaving his brother in the hotel when he drowned.

Njoroge said the student was pronounced dead on arrival at Memphy Hospital within Kilifi town where he was rushed to after he was removed unconscious from the pool by water attendants.

He said the body was later removed by close relatives to Joachim hospital in Mombasa for post mortem examination.

Njoroge appealed to visitors and the general members of the public who go swimming in the Kilifi beaches to be cautious of the strong waves, directing that they should move out of the areas before 6.00pm in the evening when the water get rough.

He advised parents to take responsibility of their children throughout the festivities, urging them to be accompanying their children when they go to the beaches to swim.
