Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS), Peter Munya, is at loggerheads with Meru Council of Elders, Njuri Ncheke, for opposing the recent National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi’s coronation as the Mt. Kenya Spokesperson.
The elders are said that the move by the former Meru Governor displays his selfish behaviour as well as lack of goodwill towards efforts of uniting Mount Kenya East region ahead of the 2022 General Elections.
The Council Secretary-General, Mr. Josphat Murangiri, told journalists that the elders have subsequently asked Munya to stop fighting Muturi since elders had good reasons to as to why settled on the speaker, thus the CS should not by any chance appear to correct them.
“We are asking Munya to stop fighting Muturi because we are the ones who have decided to settle on him. This is what we have been looking for and therefore the former Meru Governor cannot dictate to us on what to do,” Murangiri said.
Murangiri said the humility and integrity that has always been exhibited by Muturi had caught their eye and earned him the blessings.
“The National Assembly Speaker has no integrity issues and he is also very humble. We also wanted a person who can cool political temperatures in the region as well as uniting the leaders from within,” he said.
He said Munya was only making political noise since he cannot change things as they currently stand.
“We know where we are going since this journey started at Sagana and the President knows about it. Elders cannot be wrong,” said Murangiri.
This comes after Munya trashed the coronation that happened at Mukuruwe wa Nyagathanga in Murang’a County, Saturday, while accusing the Speaker of trying to advance his own political interests.
Munya was speaking in Isiolo where he dismissed the coronation, saying there was nothing like the seat of a spokesperson in the Constitution.
The new role held by Muturi who hails from Mbeere in Embu County could open yet another door for a political war between Munya and Meru Governor, Kiraitu Murungi, who is in full support of the Elder’s decision.
Kiraitu has so far come out to support Muturi as the region spokesperson, lauding him as the most suited leader to take the mantle when President Uhuru Kenyatta finally retires.
