50 perpetrators of gender-based violence have been arrested in Trans Nzoia following a crackdown by local administration.
Trans Nzoia County Commissioner, Samson Ojwang, said during the launch of the County Working Group on Gender Based Violence, that local administrators must be able to identify and arrest men responsible for the teen pregnancies in the region.
Ojwang said that at least 1,124 school going girls got pregnant during the Covid-19 lockdown and school holidays last year and tasked Chiefs and their Assistants to go after the men responsible for the menace to prosecution.
“We have tasked the Chiefs to look for the rest of the culprits to face the law as a way of stopping the vice,” he said.
According to the County Commissioner, police will re-arrest sexual offenders besides slapping them with heavy fines and bonds as a way of discouraging the vice to increase.
Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS), Public Service, Racheal Shebesh, was the Chief Guest, during the launch of the County working group that is expected to work as a team to end the vice.
The CAS warned local administrators against holding kangaroo courts for the GBV cases, adding that it obstructed justice to the victims.
She said that the technical working group must be able to work as a team to bring better results
“Kenyans have been asking questions about GBV and the government must be able to find solutions to the same,” she said.
The technical working group will be chaired by the County Commissioner together with the CEC gender.
