Concern as Eldoret Muslim cemetery fills up

The only Muslims’ cemetery in Uasin Gishu County is full forcing the community to bury their departed kin on the fringes of the site.

The inconvenience has caused anxiety among the Muslim faithful who now blame the Kenya Forest Service and county government for failing to provide an alternative burial site after concerns were raised long before the area was overwhelmed.

Speaking during the burial of Mr Adan Isaack a Muslim village elder, Deputy Speaker Uasin Gishu County Hosea Lamai promised to push for the acquisition of an alternative space to alleviate the suffering of the community.

“It is a matter of concern to us too, I have grown up with my Muslim brothers and to debunk on this narrative of religious differences we are here to show our solidarity in according our father Mr Adan a decent send off and assure the Muslim faithful that the government is aware of their plight,” he indicated.

Previously the Muslims were given land in Kiplombe cemetery which saw five burials conducted before the Kenya Forest Service restricted the area citing the land as a forest cover area.

Jamia Mosque Imam, Sheikh Mohamed Hussein called upon the national government to intervene and solve this problem before things get out of hand.

“Our burials are conducted within the shortest time possible and lack of burial space will hinder this, culminating to a crisis within our society who reside in this town.” He lamented.

The Muslim leadership in Eldoret has called upon the national government to solve the looming crisis staring at the Muslim community in the area.
