Residents cautioned as river Nzoia water levels rise

People living along the low-lying banks of river Nzoia have been urged to be alert as the water levels of the river continue to rise.

Usonga location chief, Paul Onyango Kanoti, while issuing the alert, noted that the water level was approaching the four–metres mark which was dangerous hence the need for vigilance.

The chief said that his Locational Disaster Management Committee was closely monitoring the situation, adding that they had already put in place mechanisms to help the community should the river burst its banks.

“We have already assessed the situation and have so far identified a few areas such as schools like Nyambare and Mahero where temporary camps can be established should need arise,” said chief Kanoti.

Kanoti however said the major challenge, should disaster occur, would be how to accommodate the displaced without compromising the Covid-19 regulations especially now that schools have opened.

He called on residents in the flood prone spots lo liaise with their village elders and community representatives in the Disaster Management Committees to avoid loss of lives and property.
