Police in Busia have launched a manhunt for a suspect who escaped from police after he was found in possession of cannabis sativa worth Sh12.6 million.
Speaking to the press in his office, Busia DCIO Benard Wamalwa said that the suspect, James Musungu was found in possession of seven bags of bhang weighing 419 kilograms in his store in Mabale village on Thursday.
“It was around 10am when we got information that a notorious trafficker by the name James Musungu had delivered the cargo and was preparing for transit to Mombasa,” said Wamalwa adding that the police officers moved in swiftly and managed to break into his store and recovered the narcotic drug.
He said the suspect however managed to escape after fighting the officers and even injured one on the eye.
“He hit the officer with a fist hence injuring the right eye before escaping into the crowd,” he explained noting trafficking of marijuana was rampant along the border.
The DCIO said that the illegal drug is suspected to have been smuggled from Uganda through the illegal routes. “This one came through Marachi,” he said, adding that the officers also recovered a motorcycle that the suspect used to ferry bhang.
He urged members to continue supporting the officers in the fight against crime lamenting that bhang had ruined the lives of many Kenyans particularly the youth.
