Government urged to establish fund to support orphanages

Siaya county woman representative Dr. Christine Ombaka has urged the government to establish a kitty to support orphanages in the country.
Dr. Ombaka said the kitty was necessary as it was the responsibility of the government to take care of the vulnerable persons in the society.
Speaking at Amani Children’s home in Gem constituency during the distribution of food to 17 orphanages from across Siaya, the woman representative challenged even the county governments to come up with such a fund that will help support registered homes taking care of orphans.
“Since it is the responsibility of the government to take care of the vulnerable persons in the society, there should be a legislation to compel the government to allocate a specific proportion of the national revenue to support orphanages”, she said.
Dr. Ombaka lamented that the responsibility of taking care of children in the orphanages has been left to well-wishers, most of them from outside the country.
She said that whenever well-wishers fail to meet their commitments, orphans are left to suffer hence the need to have a law and kitty to cater for them.
The county MP called on Kenyans to support orphanages to take care of vulnerable children by donating whatever they could.
Director of Amani children’s home Rev. Kenneth Wachianga hailed the MP for the support and urged county and national governments to explore modalities of supporting such homes.
