Residents of Bunyala County will benefit from the installation of eight lightning arrestors a which are designed to arrest the spate of deaths caused by lightning in the area .
Speaking to the press at his home in Budalangi, the area MP Raphael Wanjala said that the area was prone to lightning strikes due to convectional rain experienced in the region.
“I have deliberately decided to protect the lives of the people because they have suffered from numerous lightning strikes,” he said.
Wanjala pointed out that he has already installed two of the gadgets at St Annes Bunyala Girls Secondary School and Makunda secondary school which will be handed over to the community on Thursday (tomorrow) .
He explained that the lightning arrestors which costs shs. 2.2 million each will not only serve the learning institutions but the local community living within a radius of 10 kilometers.
The lawmaker cited John Osogo Secondary school, Osieko, Bulwani, Sisenye as some of the areas earmarked for the installation adding that the gadgets once erected will also serve Bumala, Sigulu island and Bondo (Siaya County).
“We have installed four lightning arrestors during the 2017/ 18 financial year with another four scheduled for the 2018,19 financial year.
Early in the month of December, four lives were lost in Busia County when lightning struck in Samia and Teso North Sub Counties.
Stakeholders including Busia County Service Delivery Committee expressed concern as the number of incidences urging local leaders to consider installing lightning arrestors.
