Kisii County to supply fingerlings at subsidized price

Kisii County Government has moved to offer fish fingerlings at a reduced price in a bid to encourage more residents to embrace fish farming in the area.

Speaking at the Agricultural Training College (ATC) in the outskirts of Kisii town, Kisii Governor James Ongwae assured residents of quality and cheap fingerlings at a cost of Sh5 apiece after the construction of fish multiplication and demonstration centers at Ogembo and Bomorenda.

“The county fish farmers have been linked to the Opapo Fish Processing Factory in Migori County to form the Southern Nyanza chain to fully commercialize aquaculture,” Ongwae added.

He was speaking during the commissioning of Aquaculture Business Development Program (ABDP) motor vehicle, where he said the number of fish ponds in the county currently stood at more than 300.

The Governor was accompanied by Kisii County CEC for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperative Development, Mr Esman Onsarigo, Director of Fisheries Department, Mr Edwin Mugo, and County ABDP Coordinator, Mr Samson Machera.

Kisii County is one of the 15 counties chosen to implement ABDP which is sponsored by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and co-funded by National and county governments to a tune of Sh14.9 billion.
