The County Government of Garissa is seeking collaboration with the Islamic Relief organization with an aim of creating sustainable framework for supporting orphans and orphanages.
According to the County Deputy Secretary, Abdirashid Mohamed, Governor Ali Korane’ Administration was formulating a plan which would see orphans and orphanages in Garissa County receive support from the County government.
Abdulrashid was speaking after flagging off food items worth about Sh 10 million donated by Islamic Relief for Ramadhan and Covid-19 support for some 2,300 households in Balambala and Lagdera Sub-counties.
“By collaborating with Islamic Relief organization which already is supporting some 1,250 orphans. We want them to create a database for all the orphans and orphanages and then the County government will come in and do a resource mobilization,” Abdirashid noted.
The Deputy Secretary said that the outbreak of Covid-19 had adversely affected the operations of many orphanages in Garissa jeopardizing the future of hundreds of children.
Each of the 2,300 households will receive 24 Kgs of assorted food packs that contain 6 kgs of rice, 4 kgs of wheat flour, 4 kgs of maize flour, 4 kgs of sugar, 2 litres of vegetable oil, 2 kgs of beans and 2 kgs of dates.
Present during the event were Islamic Relief’s Regional Desk Coordinator, Jama Hanshi, Garissa Office Project Manager, Eric Aduma and the Program Manager, Abdirashid Yussuf.
Others were Special Programs Chief Officer, Mohamed Abdullahi, Director Donor Coordination, Mohamed Sahal and the acting Garissa Municipal Manager, Abdinoor Ole Hussein.
